4 Star Gold Award - Visit England Independent Inspected
Full character of original barn retained with quality conversion with exposed wooden beams, A-frames, brick and stone work.
Old Shire Stables is Visit England inspected 4 STAR GOLD AWARD luxury holiday cottage with ensuite
Being one of the oldest building on the farm and converted in 2010 from a traditional stone building that used to house the large Shire Horses that worked the land (hence the beautiful large entrance door!) into wonderful and very spacious self-catering accommodation. We have tried to retain the character of the old buildings for a unique holiday home and experience, but at the same time we’ve incorporated all modern facilities and eco friendly features to create a unique and special place to stay - using traditional , natural and local materials to create a light, airy and modern building that is comfortable and tastefully furnished with a large open plan kitchen dining area and lounge with French windows to admire the Peak District views.
The fully-equipped kitchen was hand crafted by the owner farmer Ray (with his love of wood , and with a little help) from seasoned Oak planks from the farm with oak and marble worktops - has an electric oven(double oven) and hob, microwave, dishwasher and large fridge freezer; there is a separate utility room with a washing machine. The large dining table is also hand made locally, as it most of the bedroom furniture. The large dining table seats six people (plus 1 highchair) and is locally made from wood, as are the dining chairs, bench and most of the bed and bedroom furniture - supporting local and natural materials is important to us!
The living area hosts a cosy Clearview log burning stove and
The lounge area hosts French Windows with spectacular views of the Peak District fields and hills beyond, including the infamous and spectacular Roaches rock formation - one of the most iconic area of the Peak District National Peak.... and of course stunning sunsets.
The Clearview log burner and cosy sofas are perfect to relax around after a busy day. There’s a Smart TV and DVD player too, so you can catch up on your favourite programmes or watch a movie whilst you’re here.
There are three super comfortable bedrooms at Old Shire Stables. The first double bedroom has an ensuite shower room and large window with the cherry blossom on the tree outside in the spring. On the other side of the cottage across a large landing area showing full character of the barns original beams and exposed brickwork walls is another double and twin bedroom, perfect if you are travelling with little ones, teenagers or Grandparents. So if you are a family of two children, parents and grandparents (or friends) this is the ideal set up!
Due to the layout of the cottage it is also cosy enough for a romantic bolt hole just for two.
The generous beds have quality mattress's are made up with quality, luxurious bed linen to help you have a good night’s sleep. We want you to feel totally relaxed during your stay here!
Just off the landing area there is also a family bathroom with a bath and shower over and a basin and WC.
There is central heating throughout, on the ground floor there is underfloor heating from our ground source heat pump so cosy for walking around as you kick of your shoes and start your holiday at the front door. Upstairs there are large oversized radiators again still heated by the ground source. The Solar Panels on the roof are used to heat the hot water.
If you need to stay in touch we have free Wifi in the cottages - if you want to switch off please just let us know and we can arrange this for you.
Old Shire Stables Cottage has it's own enclosed garden with a charcoal barbecue and locally made garden furniture, perfect for relaxed alfresco dining outside with family and friends.
The 180 degree panoramic view is quite incredible of the countryside, the Peak District National Park, The Roaches iconic outcrop of rock, Gun Hill and Morridge top hill.
The icing on the cake as to be watching the spectacular Sunsets from Troutsdale Farm throughout all the varying season, throughout the year, these are truly stunning and breath taking - do enjoy them during your stay.
We have guest with allergies who like to stay with us knowing that there have been no pets in previously, we find this of particular importance as our daughter has allergies and with this being our family home also and she often helps with the housekeeping of the cottages on changeover day.
Having 4 daughters and one being frightened of dogs we know how important it can be to go on holiday to a dog free site.
We also have our heritage breed sheep and friends sheep grazing the surrounding fields around the cottages and farm - and we just do not want any 'dog worrying incidents', especially around lambing time and when the sheep are pregnant. We had a horrific attack where out of 50 sheep we only had 15 left - and we just do not want to go through that ever again.

" Our second visit. Same high standards and welcome. Thank very much. Good to see the area in the Springtime. Everything is so green and the wildflowers superb. Would recommend Biddulph Gardens (National Trust) and Chatsworth well worth the entry fee. Cycling The Manifold Valley was fun and not difficult, particularly good for children as most of it is traffic free. Leek also worth exploring, interesting market and antique shops "
