LEEK EMBROIDERY SOCIETY EXHIBITION - TEXTILES, PEOPLE, PLACES - on until 14 September 2013
Thousands of visitors from across the globe have flocked to Leek this summer to visit a unique embroidery exhibition which celebrates the town's rich textile heritage.
'The Extraordinary Leek Embroidery Society: Textiles, People, Places' exhibition is part of the Leek Textile Festival funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). Researched and organised by textile historian Brenda King and local historian Cathryn Walton, the exhibition features fascinating domestic and ecclesiastical pieces together with original designs, many of which have never been seen in public before.
Groups from the National Trust, the Embroidery Guild, Victorian and Textile Societies have joined visiting individuals from as far afield as Australia, Canada, the UISA, France, Italy and the Netherlands to view these special exhibits and learn more about the needle-women who stitched them and the famous designers who created them.
So far, over 3,000 people have visited the exhibition and loved it with typical visitor comments including: "Marvellous stuff, Leek should be proud" and "A truly excellent display. You must shout it from the rooftops."
The exhibition is on at the Nicholson Museum and Art Gallery until Saturday 14 September between 10am and 4pm Mondays to Saturdays so there's still plenty of time to visit.
iIt is taking place in this Arts and Crafts building in the centre of Leek – a town with an illustrious textile heritage.
Alongside the exhibition there are also opportunities to discover hidden embroideries, and stunning stained glass, at churches across the Moorlands. Pick up the church trail leaflet from Leek Tourist Information Centre (TIC) for details of the special opening hours when churches will be displaying their Leek embroideries.
Alternatively, you can join Cathryn Walton on a guided walk starting from the TIC at 2pm on Saturdays 24 August and 14 September.
Funded by the HLF, the exhibition, church exhibitions and the walks are all free.
